The National Park Service released its annual bison population numbers for Yellowstone this week, so if you’re planning on doing a little bison watching, listen up.
This year they estimate 3,700 bison as opposed to last year’s 3,900 and 2005’s high of 5,000 bison. According to the National Parks Service, these fluctuations in size are normal. If you’re planning a Yellowstone trip, look for more bison to be hanging around on the Northern Range(around 2,300 bison) with the smaller population(1,400 bison) in the Central Interior. We’ve been told that some of the best spots to find them include: Fountain Flats and in the Hayden valley near Yellowstone River. These beasts can be up to six feet tall, weigh up to 2,000lbs and run close to 30mph. Attacks have and do happen so be smart and use a good set of binoculars from far, instead of getting too close and regretting it.
