Update on Camp Fire in a Can

Thanks to some sharp-eyed readers, we have an update to the New Ideas department seen in the Summer 09 issue of RV.

The Press Release we received from Camp Fire in a Can suggested that their product is "not a problem" where there is a fire ban. Well, one reader from Canada wrote us to tell us that its not true. "Your article about the "Campfire in a Can",(pg 10) it's stated that "Fire Ban? No Problem". You may be able to use this in the USA if there is a campfire ban but, in British Columbia, Canada,(where there is approx 900 fires burning as of Aug. 6th 2009) when there is a campfire ban this kind of apparatus cannot be used. Here is a quote from the Province of BC, Forestry. "This ban does not restrict fires in stoves using gas, propane, or briquettes (for cooking only). This restriction does apply to open flame campfire apparatus (i.e. propane campfires, etc.)"

1. Maybe that's why the Camp Fire in a Can comes with a cooking grill. I swear, officier, we were just about to slap the steaks on this 3 foot wall of flame. We like 'em well done.

2. The BC fire ban issue is a hot topic, one that is often misunderstood.

When you hear someone say that there is a fire ban in BC and that you can’t use your propane campfire, do some research about your specific campground area. You will be surprised at what you find out!

In BC alone, there are 6 separate forestry regions that deal with their own fire ban issues. There are also dozens of municipalities, towns, as well as privately owned properties, all with their own interpretation of the 6 different regional fire ban rules that may be in effect at any one time throughout the Province.

Here are some Fire Ban questions to ask:

Ask if your propane campfire has a cooking grill can you use it for cooking.

Ask specific fire ban questions about your specific campground.

Ask the campground if they are exempt from provincial fire ban rules because of their location

Ask what forestry region your campground is in so you can research the proper region
